This new musical follows two intertwining love stories—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife, Persephone—as it invites audiences on an epic journey to the underworld and back. Hadestown pits nature against industry, faith against doubt, and love against fear.

Trivia

Hadestown originated as singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s indie theatre project that toured Vermont, which she then turned into an acclaimed album. Mitchell and her artistic collaborator, director Rachel Chavkin, transformed the show into a genre-defying musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz.

Both couples’ stories involve characters drawn from classical mythology. The Orpheus/Eurydice tale has been staged many times—examples include the Gluck opera Orfeo ed Euridice and the film Black Orpheus, among others.

History

The musical premiered Off Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in the spring of 2016, followed by engagements in Edmonton, Alberta and London, before transferring to Broadway.
